This month’s Recommended Readings

The New Rules of Marketing and PR: How to Use News Releases, Blogs, Podcasting, Viral Marketing and Online Media to Reach Buyers Directly, by David Meerman Scott. This book promises to be a must-read guide to the New World of Marketing – the Internet, and how to capitalize on this powerful and very effective business communication medium to reach more customers at a fraction of the cost of traditional advertisement.

TIPS

How to bring your customers more satisfaction

Customers are more important than business ideas, financing, technology, or anything else. Make them feel that way.
Give Customers more and better value than they expect - ALWAYS
Customers don’t buy products or services, they buy what the product or service gets them. Make the “get” better for them.
Respect your Customers’ time – especially in communicating. Shorter is better.
If a mistake is made, own up to it immediately, communicate and fix it above and beyond their expectation. It’s better to lose a few dollars than a Customer.
Do what you said you will do, when you said you will do it. “Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.” – Mark Twain

How to hurricane-proof your business
the obvious and the not-so-obvious

We are now officially in Hurricane Season, and everyone in Florida and other coastal states hears daily warnings about hurricane preparedness to protect our family and property. At the same time, very little is said about protecting our businesses.

The obvious measures we can take are to install window and door shutters, carry windstorm and flood insurance, and make sure files and equipment are protected when a storm approaches.

But, how about the not-so-obvious? Here are some ways to prepare:

Draft, test and review annually a Disaster Recovery Plan that includes up to date backups of all your data and tested restores, emergency remote operational capabilities, and offsite storage of mission critical information – including copies of the Disaster Recovery Plan!
Update quarterly and distribute employee emergency contact information to key personnel.
Purchase and renew business continuation insurance to prevent catastrophic losses in case a hurricane prevents you from operating for several days, weeks or longer.
Discuss with your financial institution THEIR Disaster Recovery Plan and contingency plan to provide service in case they experience storm damage.
Draft and implement a Disaster Emergency Employee Compensation Policy that spells out how your employees will be compensated if normal operations cannot be started for a while.
Create a checklist and conduct a meeting with key personnel to ensure your business is ready and well protected this Hurricane Season!
